We're Here!

After a long and complicated and providential day- or days, I suppose- we arrived in Sydney at 6:00 this morning.  Following a hurried progression through immigration and quarantine, we were met by John and Kathy Blahut, who have graciously agreed to let us stay with them until we can arrange accommodations.  But for now, let me briefly recount why today can properly be described as divinely fortuitous.

This morning, after saying good-bye to our respective families, we boarded a flight from Birmingham to Atlanta that was promptly struck by lightning.  The resulting chaos that ensued at the Delta counter was incredibly frustrating, but thanks to a Delta ticketing agent, two free seats on a Northwest flight to Memphis, and a group of U.S. soldiers, we were able to navigate our way to Los Angeles in time to catch Qantas flight number twelve to Sydney.  Not coincidentally, our flight was also the same flight of innumerable Catholic youth who will be in Sydney for World Youth Day, which is a week-long celebration of Catholicism that has locals in a bit of a fuss because it involves shutting down major sections of the central city.

Nevertheless, we arrived without further major incident and spent most of the day getting to know Sydney and the Blahuts.  We inspected several rental properties- an incredibly competitive 15-minute process in which potential renters crowd into an overpriced apartment to decide whether or not to file an application.  And, we meandered through the northern suburbs of Sydney to become familiar with the city which we will enjoy this next year.

There will certainly be more to come soon, but for now, our initial- albeit anecdotal- impression is that Sydney is an attractive, playful, witty, easy-going city full of charming and gracious people, which promises to make for an unbelievable experience.

G'day mates!! What a great start to your adventure!!

Just after you left, our ears perked up hearing references to Sydney on the radio about the Catholic Youth Day and the visit of the Pope. That'll be an experience!

Mom feels like her experience with the Alabama DMV trying to get Dixon's boating license rivals your experience on the Delta ticket counter! But glad yours was successful--we tracked your flight online all the way across the US and out into the Pacific.

Your departure is still all the buzz here--you are being asked about almost hourly. Lots of well wishes and prayers follow you on your way.

Love your lexicon--I wonder how Will Ferrell is received there!

Love and all the best!! Valerie and Warren

Your blog would sound like an essay that was too advanced for me. I'm betting that Wilson wrote it. Anyways, glad you got there safely!

Welcome to Sydney. Your cousin Kim spent four years in Sydney and loved it. On my last trip there, we did the Darling Harbour bridge climb. Well worth the time if you have the opportunity. Also the Sydney Opera House full tour.

If you need help while there, don't hesitate to ask. Kim has many friends and co-workers there.

What is a trip around the world with out a splash of lightning to get things started?

Great Blog name -- I look forward to following your adventures.

Good luck finding an apartment, I hope that won't be too much of an adventure.

You don't know me so I will identify myself as Louise McPhillips' father.
Louise clewed me into your year-long adventure in Sydney. My wife and I made three trips to Australia in 1990, 1996 and 1997. We went everywhere you can go and slighted Brisbane as the only maJor city we really did not explore. We landed there twice and I got out of the plane so I could truthfully say I had been to Brisbane. You look like you will be busy in Sydney and that will I suppose limit your travcelling to other parts of Australia. Pity. There is so much to see and love in OZ. Never-the-less I shall follow your blog with interest and envy. Best
